QIRC UQ Co-Director, Professor Gabrielle Belz, has been awarded an Australian Research Council Laureate Fellowship, one of the most prestigious research awards in Australia.
Professor Belz leads research that aims to understand how the linings of the gut and lungs, known as the epithelium, protect the body by triggering immune responses or repairing damage.
The fellowship will support Professor Belz's research into innovative methods for understanding how cells work at the body's epithelial barrier to preserve life. This research will provide the Australian biotechnology sector with new insights to create unique biopharmaceuticals and technologies for nutrient and drug delivery, as well as new vaccines. The results of Professor Belz’s work will help Australia develop independent capabilities, advance the health and medical manufacturing workforce, and contribute to reducing the disease burden in line with the National Preventative Health Strategy.
